Parental Communication is Key to Help Battle Inhalant Abuse

Branchburg, NJ (PRWeb) March 21, 2007 -- There is no better tool than education to help battle inhalant abuse among our nation's youth, especially when it's delivered by a parent. In fact, the 2001 National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse found that young adults who learn about the risks of inhalant abuse from their parents or caregivers are 50% less likely to use inhalants than those who do not. The need for parental involvement and communication has never been greater, as unfortunately, research has shown that inhalant abuse has been on the rise over the past several years. March 18th - 24th is National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW) 2007, and as a leading aerosol manufacturer, Falcon Safety Products urges both parents and educators to help join the fight against inhalant abuse by spreading the word about its harmful and potentially deadly effects.

To enhance their efforts, parents and educators can visit a newly developed inhalant abuse training program at www.inhalantabusetraining.org. Designed specifically for parents and guardians, the inhalant abuse web-training was created by the New England Inhalant Abuse Prevention Coalition, the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Northeast Regional Center for Healthy Communities and is supported by a grant from the US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The training contains useful information about the latest trends in inhalant abuse, how to prevent it, how to identify it and how to talk to your children about it. It also includes many links and resources to download - some specific to participating states.

"Falcon is proud to support the New England Inhalant Abuse Prevention Coalition and its new web-based inhalant abuse training initiative for parents," said Phil Lapin, President and CEO of Falcon Safety Products. "The inhalant abuse training is organized and easy to navigate and gives parents exactly the tools that they need to help connect with their children and talk to them about the dangers of inhalants. We applaud the New England Inhalant Abuse Prevention Coalition for developing the training and insist that parents nationwide take the time to visit the web site and take advantage of the training -- it can help save your child's life," concluded Lapin.

Falcon is a company with a long standing commitment to consumer safety, and for over 20 years has taken great strides to spread the word about the dangers of inhalant abuse. Its efforts include enhanced product packaging and labeling, proactive public communication and the support of multiple agencies and advocacy groups involved in the fight against inhalant abuse. Additionally, in 2006 Falcon increased its efforts by introducing a safer version of its compressed-gas duster and by developing a comprehensive inhalant abuse educational campaign that reached over 116 million people.

NIPAW is an annual media-based, community-level program designed to increase understanding about the use and risks of inhalant abuse. An advocate for consumer education and public awareness, Falcon, manufacturer of the Dust Off® brand of compressed-gas dusters, has supported the event and its overall mission since its inception. An integrated program, NIPAW has garnered support nationwide, including that of schools, the media, local police departments, consumers, health organizations and agencies.

Inhalant abuse is a deadly game of Russian Roulette - abusers can die the first time, or any time they try an inhalant. Also known as "huffing," "dusting," or "bagging," inhalant abuse is the deliberate concentration or sniffing of fumes, vapors or gases from common products found in homes, communities and schools for the purpose of "getting high." There are over 1,400 easily accessible, legal, everyday products that can be abused as inhalants. When used as intended, these products are safe, serve a useful purpose and enhance our quality of life, but when intentionally misused they can inflict irreversible damage to the body and be deadly.

Founded in 1953, Falcon Safety Products, Inc. is a privately held corporation headquartered in Central New Jersey. A world leader in compressed-gas technology, Falcon manufactures a diverse line of products including the Dust-Off® brand of computer / personal electronics cleaning products and signal horns for the marine, sport and safety markets.
