Titan Technologies International, Inc. Introduces the World's First Auto-Return SUBSEA Tensioner at OTC 2008 to the Offshore and SUBSEA Oil Technolo

(PRWEB) May 2, 2008 -- Titan Technologies introduces the world's first

Auto-return SUBSEA Tensioner at OTC 2008 Booth # 5800/5801.

Houston based Titan Technologies International, Inc., the fastest growing company in the bolting technologies industry with global representation, offering 'one stop engineered solutions to bolting problems' has dramatically changed the SUBSEA Bolt/Stud Tensioner landscape with the introduction of a new and radically innovative SUBSEA Tensioner System. The revolutionary new SUBSEA Tensioning system will be marketed as the AquaTite? through Titans worldwide network of Sales Representatives and Stocking Dealers. Titan has recently applied for a patent for this revolutionary new technology

Titan has set a new and unrivalled performance benchmark with the introduction of the AquaTite? SUBSEA Tensioning system. The Titan AquaTite? system will save 45% to 80% of dive time, increase safety, reduce diver fatigue and improve the SUBSEA bolting process.

BACKGROUND

The risk and consequences of developing a leak in subsea pipelines, has led to a more or less "industry standard" of bolt tightening under water for critical applications. This is of course tensioning and in most cases the use of 100% tensioning systems and procedures. This involves the lowering of all the Tensioners down to the divers at the work spot, of course providing support from a ship or barge as well as coordination with the pipe laying barge. A Tensioner is fitted to each individual bolt, the Tensioners are connected together (daisy chained) and a high pressure down pipe is connected between the pump on top side and this arrangement. Pressurizing the Tensioners through the pump, loads all the bolts simultaneously. This achieves a very even and accurate bolt load and compression of the flange gasket. This ensures a leak-proof flange connection.

However, the ideal situation and the real world are somewhat different. Due to the unevenness of the sea bed, the sections of pipes to be bolted up, are more often than not, misaligned. Therefore they must be aligned first before tensioning or tightening can take place.

There are tools to do this of course, such as flange pullers, but with smaller gaps (usually up to 90 mm or so) the final alignment is almost always done with the very same Tensioners. Here is where the problem starts with the conventional subsea Tensioners. Repeated use to carry out these operations, results in the piston coming out of the cylinder to a point that it needs to be sent top side in order for it to be retracted. As is often the case, the very bad visual conditions encountered on the sea bed, silt and mud, hinder the diver from seeing that the Tensioner is reaching its stroke limit. This leads to over stroking, seal extrusion and hence hydraulic oil leaks, straight into the environment. Of course the tool then needs to be sent up to top side again for seal replacement and piston retraction. All in all, it's a time consuming exercise and very costly indeed!!

Titan AquaTite?

The need was therefore for a Tensioner in which the stroke is limited so the seals CANNOT be extruded. The Tensioner also needed to have a retract mechanism for the piston to avoid all the trips top side! Double acting cylinders were one option which covered both requirements. However they are big and difficult to fit on current flange/bolt designs, They also require a complete return harness to mirror the tightening side, etc.. Spring return Tensioners were insufficient for the task because the springs simply could not push the oil all the way back up the down line and then through the very restrictive high pressure valves and fittings up to the pump.

The revolutionary new and patent pending Titan AquaTite? SUBSEA Tensioners overcome all of these problems in the following manner:

?    The Titan .invention is a system that allows the pressurizing fluid to be individually released from each SUBSEA Tensioner locally back into the sea. This simple solution allow the springs to quickly and easily return the piston.

?    The Titan AquaTite? uses dematerialized water as its hydraulic fluid instead of Hydraulic Oil. Any possibility of leaking Hydraulic oil which is used in most current SUBSEA Tensioners, into the ocean, is eliminated. The Titan AquaTite? is 100% environmentally friendly and pollutant free.

?    The Titan AquaTite? has a built in stroke limiter on each Tensioner to avoid possible over stroking and seal extrusions.

?    Releasing the water LOCALLY into the environment allows the springs to retract the piston and the Tensioner to take successive strokes. NO MORE RETURNING THE SUBSEA TENSIONER TOPSIDE to retract the piston. The Piston is returned by the springs simply by opening a valve on the Tensioner.

?    The combination of features creates the real time savings

The use of a stroke limiter in the Titan AquaTite? SUBSEA Tensioners, in conjunction with the piston return ability, RESULTS IN A SAVINGS OF BETWEEN 45% TO 80% of diver time for flange alignment and tightening operations. Sending the SUBSEA Tensioners topside because of over stroking and seal extrusion is eliminated with Titan AquaTite? SUBSEA Tensioners

?    Environmental seal

The Titan AquaTite? features an environmental seal to stop the ingress of sand, mud etc. into the piston return spring mechanism. This feature ensures performance in even the most demanding water conditions for example where silt presents a problem, such as the Gulf of Mexico.

?    Other Features

The dematerialized water used within the system can be dyed with an organic and safe food coloring so the Diver can see the task performed even in a SUBSEA environment of silt or turbidity.

The Titan AquaTite? is designed in a diver friendly. A simple push of a lever or twist of a knob opens and closes the system.
